OCEAN LIGHT II ADVENTURES COASTAL EXPLORATION ABOARD THE OCEAN LIGHT II SOUTHEAST ALASKA

With Alaska there is no parallel perspective, it is a land in its own. Huge walls of glacier ice, vistas of coastal fiords stretching out into the ice-covered mountains and the never-ending procession of wildlife. Orca, minke and humpback whales, seals, sea lions, Dall's porpoise, black bear, grizzly and goat, are just a few of the species that we could see on our journey. Alaska supports a healthy bird population, with over 400 species in the state. Eagles, perhaps the most majestic avian residents, thrive in the region and they can be sighted daily in most of the southeast. Southeast Alaska, commonly referred to as "The Panhandle" stretches 500 miles from Dixon Entrance to the Gulf of Alaska. Numerous small fishing and lumbering communities such as Ketchikan, Sitka, Petersburg and Juneau are located along the Panhandle, isolated from each other by rugged terrain and pristine wilderness. The mild coastal climate of Southeast Alaska produces lush coniferous forests of Sitka spruce and western hemlock, growing below snow-capped peaks and between the ice-blue glaciers that flow from them. Hundreds of islands are nestled in along the southeast coast and provide infinite areas to discover and explore. While an exact itinerary would contradict the spirit of the voyage, we will be making some scheduled stops: visits to the gold rush towns, Clarence Straight, Frederick Sound, Stephens Passage, Baranof Island, Tracy Arm, Behm Canal, Icy Straights, Thomas Bay and Admiralty Island. We will move locations every day and ample time will be available for photography, wildlife viewing, exploration and relaxation. By utilizing the Ocean Light II as our base, as well as our mode of transport between various sites; we will use a motorized inflatable to transfer people between the boat and the shore. Also on board are seven kayaks for those wishing to enjoy the tranquillity of paddling. Much time will be spent ashore, walking, hiking in the forests, beachcombing, exploring the towns and just enjoying this wonderful land. For so many, the name says it all, and possibly Alaska does have it all. It is certainly a holiday you will never forget, and probably one you wished you had taken sooner.
